About the author
Mário de Sá-Carneiro (1890–1916) was a Portuguese poet and writer, born in Lisbon and died in Paris. He was one of the most important representatives of the "Orpheu generation"; a close friend of Fernando Pessoa, he co-founded the literary magazine Orpheu in 1915, bringing the European avant-garde to Portugal. His poetry collection Dispersão (1914) is regarded as a classic of Portuguese modernist poetry. Sá-Carneiro's work is marked by acute self-awareness, a sensitive grasp of modern urban experience, and an aesthetic exploration tinged with decadence, with a concise and tense poetic style. The library also holds issues No. 1 and No. 2 of Orpheu, which he helped edit, showing his central role in the Portuguese modernist movement. Public information is limited, and biographical details are largely unavailable, yet his influence endures.
