Reading tips
- Read through once first to grasp the overall feel of the language, then read closely paragraph by paragraph with a dictionary on the second pass; do not translate word by word on the first pass.
- Note recurring images and keywords while reading to help understand the author's language style and thematic tendencies.
- You may consult German literary history for contemporary background, but do not rely excessively on secondary interpretations.

About the author
Zur Linde, Otto (1873–1938) was a German poet and publisher and a notable figure in early twentieth-century German-language literature. He founded the literary magazine Charon, which brought together contributors and promoted the exchange of new poetry and literary criticism; the journal is regarded as one of the important venues of early Expressionism. His representative work Die Kugel reflects a deliberate exploration of form and language with Expressionist tendencies. On the whole, he was both a creative writer and an organizer of literary activity, and he exercised a certain influence during the rise of Expressionism. Public information about the details of his life is limited, and existing accounts center mainly on his editorial work and his poetry, on which basis readers may understand the role he played in the early phase of German-language modernist literature.
