About the author
Gustav Sack (1885–1916) was a German poet and novelist, often regarded as one of the pioneers of Expressionist literature. Born in 1885, he died on the front lines of the First World War in 1916 at the age of thirty-one, and his writing career was brief and concentrated. His representative work is Der Rubin, and he also wrote Der rote Weinstock. Because he died so young, his works circulated only to a limited extent, and publicly available material on him is relatively scarce; a complete account of his life still awaits further study. Sack's works tend to focus on the spiritual tension and inner conflicts of individuals under the pressure of reality, with a concise and highly charged language that carries the strong subjective quality common to Expressionist literature. Though small in quantity, his writing offers an early example of German-language Expressionism in the early twentieth century and has drawn the attention of later scholars.
