DC Omnibus Vol. 1

This volume is the first in the DC Omnibus series, primarily collecting the DC comic Huntress: Year One. The series ran for six issues, published by DC Comics from May to July 2008, written by Ivory Madison, penciled by Cliff Richards, with inks by Art Thibert, Norm Rapmund, and Rebecca Buchman, colors by Jason Wright, and lettering by Sal Cipriano. The story takes place near Helena Bertinelli's twenty-first birthday: she lives and hunts on a farm belonging to the Assaro family in Sicily and is about to inherit the entire Bertinelli family fortune left behind by a massacre. When she was eight, a mob vendetta took the lives of her whole family, and the killers also took the cross from her before her eyes; afterward she was sent abroad, raised by relatives in Sicily, and under their influence learned to use a crossbow. Upon learning who orchestrated the family massacre and who the actual killer was, Helena decides to don self-made gear and take up arms to pursue the truth, transforming from a hunted orphan into a hunter who goes on the offensive. Along the way she meets Barbara Gordon, Catwoman, Batman, and others; she is angrier and more violent than mainstream superheroes, and this sows a long-term rift with Batman. In the end, she renounces the Bertinelli family's criminal inheritance and "baptizes" herself as the Huntress.
