Editor's review

Dal profondo is a work by the Italian poet Ada Negri; the title can be understood as "From the depths," which accords with Negri's consistently lyrical tone. Her poetic language is direct and emotionally warm, often starting from personal experience and the feelings of lower-class life, and this collection is a light entry point for approaching modern Italian poetry. The Italian-language public-domain electronic edition provided by Project Gutenberg makes reading the original convenient, allowing readers to directly experience the sound and rhythm of the poems without relying on translation. For readers unfamiliar with Italian, the book is better suited as material for comparing the original with a translation, in order to appreciate line breaks, word choice, and tone. There is no need to try to read it all at once; you can choose a few poems at a time and read them slowly, noting recurring images and emotional movements. For readers studying Italian women's poetry or Negri's work, this collection also has reference value.

FAQ

Can I read this book without knowing Italian?
This book is in the original Italian, and reading it directly without any Italian will present considerable obstacles. It is recommended to read it alongside a reliable Chinese or English translation and treat the original as material for experiencing sound and line breaks rather than as an object of word-by-word understanding; this way you can still enjoy reading poetry.
Is this book suitable for Italian beginners?
It can be used as supplementary material, but it is not recommended as a main textbook. Negri's poetry is not especially difficult in vocabulary, but poetic language involves omissions and inversions, and beginners can easily get stuck on syntax. If you already have basic grammar and a certain vocabulary, using short poems to practice reading aloud and language feel is feasible.
What kind of poet is Ada Negri?
Ada Negri was an Italian poet from the late nineteenth to the first half of the twentieth century. Her works are mainly lyric poetry, often starting from personal experience and the feelings of lower-class life, with direct language and emotional warmth. This book shows her lyrical style; to understand her work more fully, you should also consult other collections and public research materials.

About the author

Ada Negri Author · Italian · 1870–1945

Ada Negri (1870–1945) was an Italian poet and writer, born into a working-class family in Lodi. She rose to fame in 1892 with her poetry collection Fatalità, and went on to publish Tempeste, Maternità, Dal profondo, Esilio, and Orazioni. Her poems draw heavily on the hardships of the poor and the fate of women, written in a direct and emotionally intense style that combines social concern with personal lyricism. In library classifications she is often placed under inspirational and personal growth, reflecting how her work, beyond its depiction of suffering, conveys resilience and self-development. In 1940 she became the first woman admitted to the Italian Academy, a distinction that added public significance to a female writer long overlooked.
