Editor's review

Command is a novel by the British writer William McFee (1881–1966), belonging to English literature and released as a free ebook by Project Gutenberg. McFee had rich seafaring experience, and his writing often concerns the sea, machinery, and the human condition; this book also unfolds its narrative against such a background and portrays something of his characters' choices and situations in a particular environment. As an early English novel now in the public domain, its value lies not in strong plot excitement but in presenting the plainer, solidly realistic style of early twentieth-century English literature, along with the sense of space and professional detail peculiar to sea fiction. For readers who want to know the English literary resources collected by Project Gutenberg or who are interested in novels with a seafaring and maritime background, this book can be a light reading attempt. It is best read as a period text, noting how its narrative pace differs from today's popular fiction.

Who it's for

  • Readers who like fiction about the sea, maritime life, and sailors

  • Readers who need a Chinese translation or annotated edition for classroom use

Reading tips

  1. Read the opening chapters first to see whether the narrative pace and vocabulary suit you before deciding to read it all.
  2. Keep a vocabulary notebook and record nautical and professional terms as you read.
  3. Read alongside material on McFee's life and seafaring background to help understand the characters' situations.
  4. For extensive reading, advance a fixed amount each day so a slow pace does not make you stop.
