About the author
Prosper Mérimée (1803–1870) was a nineteenth-century French writer best known for his short stories and novellas. Sixteen of his works are held in this collection, including Carmen, La Vénus d'Ille and Colomba, as well as Letters to an Unknown and Quatre contes de Prosper Mérimée. His fiction often draws on foreign or regional settings, such as Spain and Corsica; his style is cool and restrained, his plots tightly constructed, and he favours a detached, observant narrative voice that sets passion against fate, giving his stories a distinctive tension. Carmen later became widely known through its operatic adaptation, bringing the figure into the视野 of world literature. Public information on his life, education and official posts is limited, and no speculation is offered here.
