About the author
Anthony Norris Groves (1795-1853) was a Christian writer of the first half of the nineteenth century; publicly available information about him in Chinese is limited. Judging from the two works recorded here, his writing spans devotional literature and travel narrative. Christian Devotedness discusses the themes of wholehearted commitment, simplicity of life, and giving, in an earnest and direct style marked by exhortation and self-examination; it circulated among interested readers and is often regarded as a representative statement of his practical faith. Journal of a Residence at Bagdad, written in diary form, records what he saw and experienced during his stay in Baghdad in a plain tone that combines personal observation with local manners and customs. Though different in form, the two books together show his concern for the practice of faith and his careful attention to life in a foreign land. His output is small and thematically focused, making it useful for readers studying nineteenth-century Christian devotional writing and travel accounts of the Middle East.
