Editor's review

This is an English-language historical work on China by Demetrius Charles Boulger, published as a public-domain eBook by Project Gutenberg. Classified under Asian and general history, it was written in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century and carries the perspective and limitations of a European author of that era. Its value lies in this duality of source material and viewpoint: on one hand it offers a systematic Western account of China's politics, society, and foreign relations at the time; on the other it preserves period biases worth scrutinizing. For readers studying the history of Sino-Western relations and the construction of modern images of China, it serves as a primary-source reference rather than a neutral general history. Read it with a questioning mind, noting the author's sources, tone of judgment, and historical context, and compare its descriptions with contemporaneous Chinese materials or other historical works to grasp its layers.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Historians studying modern Sino-Western relations and Western views of China
  • Modern history students needing public-domain English sources for papers
  • Cultural researchers interested in how nineteenth-century Europeans wrote about China
  • Readers with some ability to read English sources who are willing to read critically

Not a good fit for

  • Beginners seeking a general history of China at contemporary academic standards
  • General readers who struggle with English and need Chinese translation and notes
  • Those expecting an objective, neutral popular work free of period bias

Reading tips

  1. First learn the author's era and identity, then read the main text, noting the period stance behind his judgments.
  2. Compare key passages with contemporaneous Chinese sources or other historical works, marking points of divergence.
  3. Read by theme rather than straight through, sorting political institutions, foreign relations, and social customs separately.
  4. When encountering sweeping claims, ask about the source material and distinguish factual description from the author's evaluation.

FAQ

Is this book a general history or a specialized study?
Judging from its public-domain classification, it is a work of Asian and general history covering China's history and overview, written in the systematic narrative style of a late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century European author, not a narrow specialized study.
Can the views in this book still be cited directly today?
It should not be cited directly as a neutral conclusion. It reflects a Western perspective of a particular era and has period biases and source limitations; it is better used and scrutinized as historical material for studying how the West wrote about China.
What historical background is needed to read it?
It helps to know the basic outline of modern Sino-Western contact and the approximate era of the author's writing and the international relations of the time, making it easier to judge the stance and selections in the narrative.
Is this a Chinese book or an English book?
This is an English public-domain eBook released by Project Gutenberg; the original text is in English with no Chinese translation. Readers need some ability to read English historical sources.

About the author

Demetrius Charles Boulger (1853–1928) was a British writer known for biographies of figures in Far Eastern and Central Asian history and for works on Chinese affairs. Public information about him is limited, and details of his life are largely unknown, but the four works held in this collection show where his interests lay: the two-volume Life of Gordon treats the British general Charles Gordon, while The Life of Yakoob Beg Athalik Ghazi is a biography of the ruler of Kashgar, and he also wrote a book on China. Boulger's writing draws mainly on political and military figures, with a narrative that emphasizes factual exposition and the recounting of events, in a practical style reflecting a late nineteenth-century British perspective on Asian affairs. His works are still consulted as material for understanding the Central Asian politics of the period and British narratives about China, and retain some value as historical sources.
