Editor's review

This book is a biography of Cavour written by the British writer Countess Martinengo-Cesaresco, and belongs to the history and biography category of free eBooks from Project Gutenberg. Written in English, it centers on Cavour, a key figure in the Italian unification movement, covering both his political career and the historical background of his time. For Chinese readers, its value lies not in offering light popular reading but in showing how the 19th-century English-speaking world wrote about the Risorgimento and its representatives. The original eBook is clearly formatted and moderate in length, suitable as supplementary material for studying the history of Italian unification, comparative political history, or modern biographical writing. Reading it requires some knowledge of modern European history and English reading ability; otherwise, readers may be interrupted by names, places, and political terms. It is best used as a reference or for thematic reading rather than as casual biography.

Who it's for

Reading tips

  1. First build a basic timeline of the Italian unification movement and the relationships among its main figures, then read the main text.
  2. While reading, organize Cavour's political views and key events into a chronological figure timeline.
  3. Read alongside contemporary or differently positioned historical accounts, and note the author's perspective.
  4. When encountering difficulties in English, do not look up every word; grasp the main idea of each chapter first, then revisit details.

FAQ

Is this book in Chinese or English?
According to the information, this book is an English eBook released by Project Gutenberg, authored by Evelyn Lilian Hazeldine Carrington Martinengo-Cesaresco. It contains no notes on names or places and no Chinese translation, so readers need some English proficiency before reading.
Is this book suitable for systematically studying the history of Italian unification?
It can serve as supplementary material, but it is not recommended as the sole textbook. A more reliable approach is to read it together with general history textbooks and primary sources.
What background knowledge is needed to read this book?
It is advisable to first understand the layout of the Italian states in the 19th century, Austria's influence in Italy, and the basic views of Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, and others. With this background, the political events and personal relationships in the book will be easier to understand.

About the author

Evelyn Martinengo-Cesaresco Author · British · 1852–1931

Evelyn Martinengo-Cesaresco (1852–1931) was a British writer and folklorist, born a Carrington, who long resided in Italy after marrying into the Italian noble Martinengo-Cesaresco family. She is best known for her studies of the Italian Risorgimento, including Cavour and The Liberation of Italy, 1815–1870, which introduced Cavour and the unification of Italy to English-speaking readers. She also took a keen interest in folk-song traditions, as shown in her Essays in the Study of Folk-Songs. A regular contributor to British periodicals on Italian subjects, she combined historical narrative with folklore collecting and helped convey Italy's culture and political transformation to English readers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Public information on her early education and personal life is limited; three of her works are held in this collection.
