About the author
Virna Sheard (1862–1943) was a Canadian poet and novelist. She was born in Cobourg, Ontario, and died in Toronto. After marriage she took up writing as an avocation, publishing poetry and short stories in magazines from 1898 onward. Four of her works are held here: The Miracle, and Other Poems; A Maid of Many Moods; The Ballad of the Quest; and Carry On!, spanning both poetry and fiction. Her verse is gentle and marked by religious spirituality, and her themes often touch on personal growth and perseverance, with attention to inner searching and steadfast progress. Through a lyrical, faith-inflected voice, she left a quiet but lasting mark as a woman writer in Canadian literature in English. Public information is limited, and details of her life and the full range of her work remain to be further examined.
