About the author
Valentino Carrera (1834–1895) was an Italian playwright and poet, born in Turin on 19 December 1834. He worked in the customs service in his early years and, after retiring in 1878, devoted himself to writing for the stage. Carrera championed a popular theater aimed at ordinary audiences, and his comedies were his strongest suit; his best-known work, La quaderna di Nanni (1870), was widely received. His plays also include Capitale e mano d'opera, Gli ultimi giorni di Goldoni, and Un avvocato dell'avvenire, among others. He likewise wrote historical essays and travel notes. Carrera died in Turin in 1895. Public information about him is limited and many details of his life remain obscure, yet his surviving works reveal a concern with social reality and an accessible style, giving him a place in the development of popular Italian theater.
