About the author
Richard Burdon Haldane (1856–1928) was a British statesman, lawyer and philosopher, known after his elevation as Viscount Haldane and often catalogued as R. B. Haldane. Trained in law and public affairs, he was long active in British politics, served as Lord Chancellor in the House of Lords, and played an important part in reforming the British Army. His writings span philosophy and politics; his representative work Before the War is retrospective and reflective in character, blending practical experience in government with broader intellectual concerns, and offers a first-hand perspective on British politics and intellectual life in the early twentieth century. Public information on the details of his life is limited, and the library holds only one of his works, through which readers may come to know his style and outlook.
