Editor's review

This novel comes from the hand of the late nineteenth-century Italian writer Rovetta and belongs to the narrative tradition of Italian verismo. Rovetta long concerned himself with social class and family ethics, and his characters often struggle between emotion and reality; this book continues that concern. As a public-domain ebook from Project Gutenberg, its value lies first in accessibility: readers can go straight to the Italian original without hunting for an out-of-print paper copy, making it well suited to observing the linguistic texture and narrative rhythm of nineteenth-century Italian fiction. The title “Baby” itself carries a double sense of intimacy and vulnerability; as you read, note how the author builds relationships and turns of fate around this name. Because it is the original-language version, it is better suited as supplementary reading for language learners, or for readers in Italian and comparative literature doing close textual reading. It is best not approached as a quick plot summary but read slowly, savoring the period atmosphere in dialogue and scene.

About the author

Gerolamo Rovetta (1854–1910) was an Italian author, with fourteen of his works held in this collection. Because public information is limited, the details of his life are difficult to describe at length, yet the surviving titles give a fair picture of his writing: he produced both novels and plays, and his representative works include Mater dolorosa, Casta diva, La baraonda, La moglie di Sua Eccellenza, L'idolo, La Signorina: Romanzo, Sott'acqua: racconto, and the three-act comedy La trilogia di Dorina. These works mostly take social reality and family ethics as their themes, unfolding their plots with care and giving their characters a marked dramatic tension, which shows that he was skilled in both narrative and stage writing. In this collection his works are classified under inspirational growth, suggesting that in the Chinese context they are regarded as reading with an edifying quality.
