Summary

A+X is a two-part team-up anthology series Marvel launched during the "Marvel NOW!" era, each issue featuring two creative teams each presenting a paired story of an Avenger (A) and an X-Men (X) character. This is issue #13 of the series, published October 16, 2013; it is both a regular team-up anthology and the beginning of a longer storyline.

The first half of this issue is written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by David Yardin, launching a six-part serial running through issues #13 to #18: Captain America and Cyclops (Scott Summers) face off directly. Their disagreement stems from the Avengers vs. X-Men event—Steve Rogers believes Cyclops should stand trial for Professor X's death, while Scott firmly believes that he and his companions can rely on no one else to protect mutants; their positions are diametrically opposed, and they are ultimately forced to fight side by side in the same crisis. The second half of the issue is written and drawn by Marvel veteran Howard Chaykin, featuring Black Widow and the White Queen, Emma Frost, under the title "Crash & Burn in Black & White!"; its style is cold and strongly urban, and it is one of the more talked-about pieces in the A+X series.

The cover of this issue is drawn by David Yardin, showing Captain America and Cyclops charging side by side, and bears the notice "A Brand-New Six-Part Story Starts Here," marking it as a good issue at which to begin reading this long storyline.
