About the author
Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946) was an important German playwright and novelist whose work spanned naturalism, symbolism and romanticism. The library holds nine of his works, including social dramas such as Vor Sonnenaufgang, the Berlin tragicomedy Die Ratten, and narrative works such as Bahnwärter Thiel, along with several volumes of his dramatic works. He was skilled at portraying the hardships of ordinary people, social conflict and individual fate, with careful language and vivid, tense scenes. His writing had a lasting influence on German-language literature and theater in the early twentieth century. Public information is limited, so a full account of his life and honors is not given here.
