About the author
Josep Roig i Raventós (1883–1966) was a Catalan writer and journalist from Spain who wrote fiction and plays and took part in the local cultural revival movement. Only a small number of his works are known; two are held in this collection, Ànimes atuïdes and Argelaga florida. Public information about his life is limited, so biographical details remain difficult to verify. Judging from his surviving works and his known role, however, his literary work was closely tied to the twentieth-century revival of Catalan-language culture: he wrote both fiction and drama, drew on local life and the inner lives of ordinary people, and gave his language a regional flavor, all in the service of using literature to awaken cultural identity. For today's readers he is an author worth noting when tracing the outlines of Catalan regional literature.
