About the author
Pierre Louÿs (1870–1925), born Pierre-Félix Louis, was a French Symbolist poet and novelist, born in Ghent, Belgium, and died in Paris. Eight of his works are held in the collection, including Les Chansons de Bilitis, Aphrodite: Moeurs antiques, Les aventures du roi Pausole, and La femme et le pantin. He is known for classical subjects, pagan sensuality, and an aesthetic style, often using ancient or Spanish settings to explore themes of desire and the senses with a refined, Symbolist tone. He was closely associated with André Gide, Oscar Wilde, and Claude Debussy, and his works had some influence on the French literary scene of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Public information is limited, and details of his life are largely obscure; scholarship tends to focus on the themes and style of these representative works.
