Summary

Android Development: From 0 to 1 is an Android app development tutorial written by Zhao Zhirong and published by Tsinghua University Press in 2017. At about 454 pages, it uses a case-driven approach—"case overview → core case technologies → knowledge point expansion → case summary"—with the goal of taking readers from zero to independently completing an Android project. The book is divided into three parts: Foundations, Advanced Topics, and Hands-On Practice. Foundations (Chapters 1–13) begins with the history, architecture, and platform of the Android operating system, then covers JDK installation and configuration, the Android Studio development tool, the SDK toolkit and emulator setup, creating a first Android project and analyzing its structure, app debugging, and core application-layer topics such as interface programming, UI layouts, simple and advanced controls, activities, fragments, intents, data storage, and sharing data with content providers. Advanced Topics (Chapters 14–21) moves into more complex subjects: multithreaded development, services, broadcast receivers, multimedia development, network communication technologies, Baidu Maps and location services, Android 2D graphics and animation, and development of phone features such as the camera and sensors. Hands-On Practice (Chapters 22–25) closes with complete projects: first refactoring the "Health Assistant" app using layered architecture design and refactoring, then refactoring that app with content providers, followed by an agile project practice developing the "My Player" app, and finally device testing, adding icons, generating digital signatures, packaging for release, and the full process of uploading and publishing an app to the Google Play Store. Because the book was completed in 2017, its examples and tool versions are dated; readers should consult current official Android documentation alongside it.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ

Kotlin?
