About the author
Gabriello Chiabrera (1552–1638) was an Italian poet known for his lyric poetry, pastoral verse, and librettos for opera. Born in Italy, he lived across the latter half of the sixteenth century and the early seventeenth century, working in several poetic genres, with lyric poetry as his most prominent field, where he paid close attention to form and the crafting of sound and rhythm. His pastoral poems follow the classical tradition, taking natural scenery and rural life as their subjects in a clear and graceful style. He also wrote librettos, contributing to the early practice of opera texts and leaving samples of writing for this emerging genre. His representative work, Amedeide, demonstrates his capacity for long narrative poetry. Public information on the details of Chiabrera's life is limited; existing records focus mainly on his poetic and dramatic achievements, and later scholarship has attended chiefly to his place in the Italian poetic tradition and his influence on the literary taste of his time.
