Reading tips
- Learn about the author's era and the Spanish literary background before starting the text to lower the barrier to comprehension.
- On the first pass, focus on plot and character relationships; on the second, look up vocabulary and examine language features.
- Keep a Spanish dictionary or electronic lookup tool ready; for long sentences, identify the main clause first, then work out the modifiers.
- Alternate reading with other Spanish public-domain novels to avoid fatigue from plowing through a single work for too long.

About the author
Ramón Pérez de Ayala (1880–1962) was a Spanish writer, four of whose works are held in this collection. His representative works include the novels A.M.D.G. and Belarmino y Apolonio, as well as the two volumes of Las máscaras, a collection of essays on literature and drama. Because public information is limited, the details of his life cannot be reliably established; his works, however, show him to be skilled in both fiction and literary criticism. His novels tend to focus on inner life and social reality, with irony and philosophical reflection, while Las máscaras addresses theatrical and literary questions and reveals a critic's eye. Serious in subject and concise in style, these works hold a place in modern Spanish literature and offer Chinese readers a readable sample of twentieth-century Spanish narrative and critical tradition.
