About the author
Norman Douglas (1868–1952) was a British novelist and travel writer. Born in Thüringen, Austria, to a Scottish family, he once worked for the British Foreign Office and later lived for many years on the Italian island of Capri. He made his name with the satirical novel South Wind (1917), while his travel books Old Calabria, Alone and Fountains in the Sand are known for their elegant, erudite prose, and he is regarded as one of the finest travel writers of the twentieth century. Four of his works are held here, covering both fiction and travel writing, with subjects drawn largely from the landscapes, customs and history of the Mediterranean and North Africa, written in a relaxed and witty style. Public information is limited, but the works themselves suffice to show his place in travel literature. He died on Capri in 1952.
