Reading tips
- Begin by browsing the table of contents and chapter lengths, divide the reading into weekly portions, and work through it paragraph by paragraph with a dictionary.
- Read alongside an English translation or other translations to help understand Finnish expressions and context.
- Note unfamiliar words and questions about the historical background, then look them up together in Finnish literary history sources after finishing.
- If using it only for language practice, closely read selected dialogue or descriptive passages rather than insisting on reading the whole book.

About the author
Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) was a Finnish journalist, writer, theosophist and utopian socialist, born in Tutari, Ingria. He served as editor-in-chief of the workers' newspaper and in 1901 founded the Finnish utopian colony "Sointula" on Malcolm Island in British Columbia, Canada. In his later years he moved to the United States and died in Rhode Island. Six of his works are held in this collection, including Äärimmäisessä talossa, Parts I and II of Pilven hattaroita, Viimeinen ponnistus, Ihmekös tuo and Aili. Public information is limited; his works largely explore social ideals, spiritual belief and the human condition, combining argument with literary imagination and reflecting the explorations of a Finnish thinker at the turn of the twentieth century.
