About the author
Clara Viebig (1860–1952) was a German novelist and playwright. Four of her works are held in this collection: Das Weiberdorf, The Son of His Mother, Absolution, and Hekuban tyttäret. Because public information is limited, details of her life remain unavailable here. Judging from the works at hand, she wrote with a plain yet forceful touch about village and small-town life, focusing on ordinary people caught in dilemmas of family, faith, and morality. Her narrative is realistic and her character portrayals are finely observed. Some of her works were translated into English and Finnish, suggesting that her writing reached readers across languages in the early twentieth century. The four titles vary in subject, ranging from group portraits of rural customs to ethical stories of kinship and redemption, together reflecting her sustained attention to human weakness and social pressure.
