Editor's review

A Reaping is a novel by the British writer E. F. Benson, a public-domain work in the Project Gutenberg free ebook collection. Benson is known for delicate psychological portraiture and a mildly satirical narrative manner, and this book continues his observation of inner life and social settings; it serves as a supplementary read for understanding the character of British fiction from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. As a public-domain ebook it is extremely easy to obtain and convenient to read on various devices at any time. Note that the book is in the original English and requires some English reading ability; public-domain ebooks usually come without a modern introduction or notes, so background information must be researched independently. Overall it suits readers interested in British literary history who are willing to experience the narrative rhythm in the original text, rather than those seeking strong plot or popular entertainment. It is best treated as part of a short-reading plan rather than read straight through in one sitting.

FAQ

Is this book in Chinese or English?
The book is in the original English, from the Project Gutenberg public-domain ebook collection. The main text is in English, with no Chinese translation included.
Will it be difficult without notes and an introduction?
Public-domain ebooks usually come without a modern introduction or notes. Readers are advised to look up background on the author and the period themselves, and to mark cultural allusions first and verify them later, which makes for a smoother reading experience.
Is it suitable as English learning material?
It can serve as extensive reading material, but the book was written long ago, its language style is distant from modern English, and it has no vocabulary notes. It is better used once you have some foundation, together with dictionary tools.

About the author

E. F. Benson (full name Edward Frederic Benson, 1867–1940) was a British writer, though public information about his life and nationality available in our records is limited. The collection holds 42 of his works, spanning a wide range of subjects: social comedies such as Queen Lucia and Miss Mapp, satirical sketches such as The Freaks of Mayfair, and novels including Scarlet and Hyssop, The Relentless City, The Angel of Pain and An Autumn Sowing. His writing is marked by witty dialogue and gentle satire, and he excelled at portraying comic figures in provincial towns and upper-class social circles. Light in tone and neatly constructed, his work has a distinctive place in early twentieth-century British popular fiction and is still enjoyed by readers today.
