Summary

Issue #9 of Superman: Unchained is the finale of the series by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee (originally published November 5, 2014, as an oversized closing issue). An alien fleet approaches Earth, and Luthor proposes the only plan that might work: inject concentrated solar energy into Superman so he can detonate within the enemy armada, trading his life for Earth's survival. Batman and Wonder Woman rush to find an alternative, General Lane, Lois, and Luthor each speak from different positions, and Superman flies into space to face the fleet without a foolproof plan. This volume concludes all nine issues of the series, using Luthor's words and flashbacks to Clark's youth to ask why Superman is Superman—not the power that never errs, but the choice to bear responsibility when the outcome is uncertain. Dustin Nguyen's dreamlike flashback sequences contrast with the main art by Jim Lee and Scott Williams. This is volume 9 of the series and the last of the nine volumes in the catalog.
