Editor's review

35 Sonnets is a collection of English-language sonnets by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, released as a free eBook by Project Gutenberg. A major figure in twentieth-century Portuguese literature, Pessoa is known for writing under multiple heteronyms, and this English sonnet collection offers readers a poetic entry point into his work. The sonnet form is strict and compact, well suited to slow reading one poem at a time and to appreciating the language choices and emotional expression shaped by metrical constraint. For English poetry lovers, the book serves as a sample of a Portuguese poet writing in English; for Pessoa scholars, it can be used to compare his writing across languages and heteronyms. The electronic edition is easy to search and reread, making it suitable for setting aside regular time to read a few poems at a stretch, while consulting notes or related scholarship to understand the background.

FAQ

Is this Pessoa's poetry in Portuguese or in English?
This is a collection of Pessoa's English sonnets, written in English and labeled as English-language. It differs from his famous Portuguese works and is suited to observing how the poet wrote in English; reading it requires basic competence in reading English poetry.
Are the sonnets difficult to read?
Sonnets are short and tightly structured, so a single poem is not overwhelming, but meter and diction can pose barriers. It is best to read through once for the general sense, then go line by line, combining reading aloud with background material; the difficulty will drop noticeably.
What kind of reading approach suits the electronic edition?
The electronic edition is easy to search and revisit, suiting short, frequent reading at set times, such as a few poems a day. After a first pass, you can also return to poems by theme or image to form your own reading threads rather than reading it all at once.

About the author

Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) was a Portuguese poet and writer, a highly distinctive figure in twentieth-century modernist literature. Two of his works are held here: 35 Sonnets and Antinous: A Poem. The former is a sequence of English sonnets, the latter a long English poem on a classical theme, showing that he wrote poetry in English early in his career. Pessoa is known for his "heteronyms": invented authorial identities, each with its own personality and style, through which different voices speak. This device has had a lasting influence on modern poetry's sense of narrative and self. He received limited recognition in his lifetime, and much of his manuscript output was published only after his death. Public information is limited, so this note confines itself to his known works and characteristic mode of writing.
