About the author

Huang Shang (1919–2012), originally named Rong Dingchang, was of Manchu ethnicity. His ancestral home was Yidu, Shandong, and he was born in Jingxing, Hebei. A contemporary essayist, journalist and book collector, he worked for Wenhui Daily for many years. His works include Jin Fan Ji, Old Plays Newly Discussed and Yuxia Shuoshu, and he is known for his book talk and textual/bibliographic studies; his writing combines a journalist's insight with a bibliophile's sensibility. This library holds four of his works, including the two volumes and the boxed set of The Works of Saltykov-Shchedrin, and Approaching Ba Jin: Ba Jin's Two Elder Brothers, spanning foreign literature and biography. Details of his early education and specific career are limited in public sources and are not elaborated here; the introduction focuses on the themes and style of his works.
