About the author

Huang Han's biographical details are scarce, and the publicly available information is limited: his courtesy name, native place, dates of birth and death, and life experiences cannot be reliably established. What can be confirmed is that he wrote one work, Maoyuan (Garden of Cats), and this is the only work of his currently known. Maoyuan is a note-style work centered on cats, drawing together a wide range of anecdotes, legends, poems, and observations related to cats, along with details about their appearance, habits, and the ways people live with them. The content is varied and full of interest. Arranged in short note-form entries, the book is concise and plain in style; it combines compiled sources with the author's own observations and comments, reflecting the curiosity and aesthetic sensibilities of a traditional literatus writing on a leisurely subject. Later generations have often regarded it as an important source for understanding traditional Chinese cat culture, and it retains both documentary value and reading appeal. Since no other works by Huang Han are known to have survived, his literary profile rests chiefly on Maoyuan.
