Huang Jingren, styled Zhongze, was a Qing-dynasty poet; public information about his life and official career is limited, and his birth and death years and nationality are not recorded in our database. Two of his works are held here: Selected Works of Huang Zhongze and Sixteen Poems of Qihuai (Sentimental Longing), commonly classified under classical poetry and also touching on modern poetry. His verse dwells on personal vicissitudes and the sorrows of travel, with a tone tending toward austere melancholy; his language is spare and his imagery subtle, and he is skilled at building emotion layer by layer within short pieces. The Qihuai sequence, tracing memories of past love, is tender and lingering and serves as an important entry into his lyric style, while the selection offers an overall view of his themes and craftsmanship. In Qing poetry Huang Jingren is known for genuine feeling and a desolate tone, and later anthologies and readers have often noted his lyric works; further research remains to be done.
