Very little is known about Huang Fanchuo's life. Public information is limited, and his native place, dates of birth and death, and specific experiences are difficult to verify. What can be confirmed is that one work by him, titled Yiyuan Yuan (The Origins of the Pear Garden), has come down to us, and that some bibliographies classify it under Eastern philosophy. The Origins of the Pear Garden is a premodern Chinese work on drama theory; it discusses the technical essentials and aesthetic principles of theatrical performance and is often regarded by later readers as an important text for studying the traditional Chinese acting system. In style, the book argues concisely and stresses principles drawn from practice rather than empty generalization. Since this is Huang Fanchuo's only extant work, his overall output is hard to describe fully, yet the influence of The Origins of the Pear Garden in the history of drama theory has kept his name alive alongside it.
