About the author

Huang Gongxiu was a physician of the Qing dynasty. Public information about him is limited, and neither his dates of birth and death nor his native place is known. Three of his works survive, all in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. Among them, Bencao Qiuzhen (Seeking Truth in Materia Medica) is a monograph on materia medica that analyzes the properties and indications of drugs in detail, emphasizing practical use and convenient reference in clinical practice; Maili Qiuzhen (Seeking Truth in Pulse Theory) deals specifically with pulse diagnosis, clarifying the relationship between pulse patterns and pathogenesis with clear arguments; and Taishi Yi'an Chubian (First Collection of Taishi's Medical Cases) records medical cases and documents the process of syndrome differentiation and treatment. Covering materia medica, pulse studies, and clinical case records, these three works show that Huang Gongxiu valued the integration of medical foundations with clinical practice and strove for concise, practical writing. His works have exerted a certain influence in traditional Chinese medical literature and serve as important reference material for understanding traditional materia medica and pulse diagnosis.
