Huang Kan (1886–1935), courtesy name Jigang and late-style name Liangshou Jushi, was a native of Qichun, Hubei, born in Chengdu, Sichuan. A prominent modern Chinese scholar of philology, phonology, and exegesis, he studied under Zhang Taiyan and, together with his teacher, was known as “Zhang–Huang,” representing the Zhang–Huang school. He taught at Peking University, Central University, and Jinling University, among others. His works span phonology, Chinese characters, and literary criticism, and include Yinyue, Shuowen Lüeshuo, and Wenxin Diaolong Zhaji. The last, a collection of notes explicating Wenxin Diaolong chapter by chapter, is distinguished by meticulous textual scholarship and incisive commentary, and has had a lasting influence on related research.
