About the author

Huang Xiufu is an ancient Chinese author whose biography is poorly documented: his birthplace, dates of birth and death, and nationality are not clearly recorded in publicly available sources. Judging from the works that survive, his writing covers two fields, miscellaneous notes and local art history. Three of his works are included in the collection: Nanbu Xinshu · Maoting Kehua, Yizhou Minghua Lu and Maoting Kehua. Maoting Kehua chiefly records anecdotes, customs and people of the Shu region and has the character of note-style literature, while Yizhou Minghua Lu is devoted to the painters and paintings of Yizhou and is an important source for understanding local painting in the Tang–Song transition. His writing is concise and factual, valuable both as historical material and for reading, and his works are therefore classed among works of Eastern philosophy and classics.
