About the author

Bao Rong was a poet of the Tang dynasty. Basic information such as his dates of birth and death and his native place is not clearly recorded, and publicly available sources are limited. Judging from the three works collected here—"Staying at Wukong Temple and Presenting a Poem to a Monk," "On the Night of the Mid-Autumn Festival in the Eighth Month of an Autumn Dusk, with Wang," and "Sent to Zhang Shishi, Collator, and Li Renxing"—his writings are mostly classical poetry. Their subjects include presentations at a temple, poetic exchanges with friends on a Mid-Autumn night, and verses sent to acquaintances in clerical posts, showing a marked character of social exchange and personal reflection. The titles often specify times, places, and recipients, indicating that he drew on everyday travel and human dealings, with a plain and natural language and restrained, inward feeling. Because surviving materials are scarce, his life cannot be examined in detail and his output is small, yet in the Tang tradition of occasional and festival poetry one may still glimpse the life and social habits of literati of the time, offering valuable fragments for later understanding of the creative world of middle- and lower-ranking Tang men of letters.
