高濂

Gao Lian was a Chinese man of letters about whose life very little is publicly known; neither his birthplace, nor his dates of birth and death, nor his official career can be confirmed, and his name has come down to later generations chiefly through his surviving writings. Eight of his works are held in this collection, spanning medicine, health preservation, prose and miscellaneous writings, historical reading, and Eastern philosophy. His representative work is Zun Sheng Ba Jian (Eight Discourses on the Art of Living), together with a plain-language illustrated edition of it, as well as Ping Shi, Ping Hua Pu, Ping Hua San Shuo, Lan Pu, and Four Seasons of Health Preservation. His writing centers on daily regimen, seasonal care, the appreciation of flowers and plants, and the refined tastes of the literati, combining practical guidance with aesthetic sensibility in a clear and meticulous style that weaves health preservation into everyday life. Overall, Gao Lian's works reflect the traditional literati concern with caring for body and mind and with the quality of living, and have had a certain influence on later health-preservation culture and writings on flower arrangement.
