About the author

Gao Hongbo, who writes under the pen name Xiang Chuan, was born in December 1951 in Kailu County, Inner Mongolia. He is a writer of children's literature, a poet and an essayist. He has served as editor-in-chief of Poetry Periodical and as vice chairman of the Chinese Writers Association and director of its Children's Literature Committee. His works include the children's poetry collections and essay collections The Elephant Judge, I Like You, Fox and Whispers, and he has won the National Outstanding Children's Literature Award and the "Five-One Project" Award on several occasions. His writing spans children's poetry, essays and nature writing; his language is clear and playful, drawing poetry from everyday scenes and animal figures while balancing children's delight in reading with literary quality. Four of his works are carried in the collection, including Selected Children's Poems of Gao Hongbo, Rainbow Dog, and The Building Blocks That Won't Go Home and The Call of Tengger from the Gao Hongbo Nature Essays series, whose subjects range from nature observation to childhood experience and reflect his sustained engagement with children's literature and the essay form.
