About the author

Gao Fang is an author about whom limited public information is available; at present, only five works are known to exist, spanning several fields. Judging from these works, Gao Fang's writing falls roughly into two categories. One consists of biographies of celebrated Chinese figures for general readers, such as Wang Xizhi: Stories of Chinese Sages and Cai Wenji: Stories of Chinese Sages, which trace the lives and spirits of historical figures in a narrative style. The other leans toward literary and reflective writing: The Gate of No Return and An Outside Diary carry a strong personal voice, with concise and restrained prose. In addition, Gao Fang Media Interviews indicates some connection with the media field. Overall, Gao Fang's works cover a wide range of subjects, including foreign literature, essays and miscellanies, biography, and language and writing, combining accessible popular reading with literary writing centered on inner experience, and maintaining a distinctive mode of expression between documentary and narrative.
