About the author

Gao Shizong was a scholar of traditional Chinese medicine in ancient China. Because publicly available sources are limited, his life, official career, and dates of birth and death can no longer be verified with certainty; this introduction can therefore only sketch his work on the basis of the writings that have come down to us. Judging from his two extant works, Collected Annotations on the Treatise on Cold Damage and A Direct Explanation of the Yellow Emperor's Basic Questions, his scholarly focus was the study and annotation of the classics of Chinese medicine. The former gathers annotations on Zhang Zhongjing's doctrine of cold damage from various commentators and adds his own views, while the latter provides a section-by-section exposition of the Basic Questions from the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic, seeking to clarify the meaning of the text directly. Both books belong to the field of medicine and reflect an approach that emphasizes close reading of the text and explanation through annotation, offering some reference value for later readers studying the classics of Chinese medicine.
