About the author

Gao Shiqi (dates of birth and death unknown; nationality not clearly recorded) was a Qing-dynasty man of letters whose biographical details are difficult to establish, as public information about him is limited. Three of his works are held in this collection, the representative ones being A Daily Record of the Eastern Tour with the Imperial Retinue (also known under a variant title) and A Journey to Songting. Judging from their titles and subject matter, his writings are chiefly connected with travels in the imperial entourage and observations along the way; they belong to the genre of travel records and notes, touching on geography, local scenery, and impressions en route. His style is plain and detailed, recording events day by day and stage by stage, so that the works read like itineraries. Such texts are useful for studying contemporary routes and local conditions, and they also reflect a literatus's effort to organize and preserve what he personally saw and heard. Owing to limited sources, his life, intellectual lineage, and the full range of his writings remain to be verified; the existing classification places him under Eastern philosophy, but on the evidence of the known works his value is better understood in terms of travel literature and historical observation.
