About the author

Ma Huan is an author whose biography, including nationality and dates, is not well documented in publicly available sources; four of his works are currently held in the collection. Judging from the subjects of these works, Ma Huan writes in two rather different fields. On one hand, works such as Yingya Shenglan, a classic account of overseas travels, relate to Eastern philosophy and classic works and have value as historical and geographical writing. On the other hand, medical practice titles such as Nutritional Prescriptions for Cardiac Rehabilitation and A Practical Handbook of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing address clinical and rehabilitation practice. The coexistence of these two kinds of writing shows that his work spans both the study of traditional texts and the popularization of applied medicine. Because reliable personal details are lacking, no further account of his background can be given here; readers may consult the works above to understand his interests and style.
