About the author

Ma Xueqiang is an author about whom little public information is available; his interests appear to focus on local history and the transformation of education. Three of his works are held in the collection, each offering a long-term study of a particular place or school. Jiaxing, South of the City: From the Majiabang Culture and Nanhu People's Commune to a Modern Urban District juxtaposes archaeological remains, commune memories and contemporary urban development to present the layered changes of one locality over millennia. Two further titles trace the century-long histories of secondary schools in Shanghai and Guangdong—one following the path from the Wuben Girls' School to Shanghai No. 2 Secondary School (1902–2022), the other examining Shimen Middle School in Nanhai, Guangdong (1932–2022)—using school history to reflect modern girls' education and broader social change. His writing draws on archives and field materials and attends to institutional evolution and local experience in a plain, accessible style that is close to academic popularization, offering useful reference for readers of history and education.
