About the author

Ma Yuan, born in Jinzhou, Liaoning Province, in 1953, is a contemporary Chinese writer and one of the representative authors of the avant-garde fiction movement. After graduating from the Department of Chinese at Liaoning University in 1982, he went to Tibet to work as a reporter and editor, and later served as a professor in the Department of Chinese at Tongji University. His years in Tibet deeply shaped his writing, which often takes Tibetan life as its setting and is marked by a mysterious atmosphere and narrative experimentation. Known for his "narrative traps," he broke with conventional realist frameworks and helped pioneer formal experimentation in fiction of the new period. His representative works include The Temptation of Gangdise and Fabrication, and the library also holds The Goddess of the Lhasa River, the two-volume Ma Yuan's Selected Tibetan Fiction, and the essay collection Love Is Life's Great Lesson, showing that his work spans both social fiction and prose.
