Gu Baoyu is an author about whom little public information is currently available; only one work is listed under this name, namely Grassroots Notes (Caogen Suiji). Judging from the title and its usual classification, the book falls under literary appreciation and consists mainly of essays and informal notes drawn from everyday and grassroots life, written in a plain and unassuming style with a personal tone of observation and reflection. Because the author's dates of birth and death, nationality, English name, education, and career cannot be confirmed, it is difficult to sketch a complete picture of the author's life and writing trajectory, and it would be inappropriate to make firm judgments about his or her literary standing. On the basis of the available material, readers may regard the author as a writer who records observations and reflections in the form of informal notes, and the work is best approached through its closeness to ordinary experience and the simplicity of its prose. Should more works or information come to light, the author's profile and literary orientation would still need to be further supplemented and clarified.
