陈老敬

Chen Laojing is a martial arts novelist about whom very limited public information is available; his life, nationality, and dates of birth and death cannot be verified. Judging from the ten works held in the collection, his writing centers almost entirely on the Southern Shaolin and Hong Xiguan material, as seen in titles such as Hong Xiguan Battles the Great General, The Ten Tigers of Southern Shaolin Bear Their Grudge, Hong Xiguan Shakes Mount Taihang, and Hong Xiguan Fights the Foreign Monk in Distant Lands. The titles themselves name the opponents and settings, suggesting that his Hong Xiguan stories form a connected line of their own. His works are commonly classified as martial arts fiction and fine fiction. From the titles alone, his writing appears to emphasize tight action sequences and feuds of the martial world, with opponents ranging from great generals to foreign monks and the White Lotus Sect, and settings stretching from the Pearl River region to Mount Taihang and distant lands, giving the stories the flavor of popular storytelling. Lacking reliable author statements or critical commentary, it is difficult to assess his literary standing accurately; what can be confirmed is that his Hong Xiguan series represents a substantial body of work within martial arts fiction.
