About the author

Chen Li's basic information—such as his courtesy name, place of origin, and dates of birth and death—is currently limited in publicly available sources and difficult to verify. Judging from the works held in this collection, three titles survive: Lidai Tonglüe (A General Outline of Successive Dynasties), Qinyou Tang Suilu (Random Notes from the Qinyou Hall), and Lidai Mengqiu (A Primer on Successive Dynasties). Their subjects involve tracing historical sequences and recording reading notes in an essayistic manner, and they are commonly classified under Eastern philosophy and philosophical readings. His writing appears to consist mainly of concise historical narrative and reflective commentary, aimed at beginners and general readers; works in the mengqiu and tonglüe genres link the rise and fall of dynasties in a form easy to memorize and suited to introductory study, while Qinyou Tang Suilu is closer to casual notes from everyday reading. Because biographical materials are scarce, Chen Li's life still awaits further verification, and readers can only glimpse his choice of subjects and prose style through these surviving works.
