About the author

Lu Can was a Ming-dynasty literatus whose name appears in the authorship of several surviving collections of notes and historical miscellanies. However, available public information on his courtesy name, native place, dates of birth and death, and official career is limited, making these details difficult to establish with certainty. Three of his works are included in the collection: Gengsi Bian, Gengsi Bian · Jinyan Leibian, and related pieces in the Mingdai Biji Xiaoshuo Daguan, indicating that his writing centered mainly on the biji genre. Gengsi Bian records strange tales and urban observations alongside social customs, written in a concise style rich in narrative interest and useful for studying Ming social culture and popular beliefs; Jinyan Leibian leans toward the classified compilation of historical materials and miscellaneous accounts. Overall, Lu Can's writings reflect the Ming literati tendency to combine accounts of the strange with personal observations, and hold some value for later understanding of the social and cultural life of his time.
