Qian Zhonglian

Qian Zhonglian (1908–2003), originally named Esun and styled Mengshao, was a native of Changshu, Jiangsu, with ancestral roots in Huzhou, Zhejiang. He was a specialist in classical Chinese literature and a poet. Over the years he devoted himself to teaching and researching classical literature, with particular depth in the annotation and selected appraisal of Qing, Song, and modern poetry, producing works that combine scholarship with readability. His editorial work on the Grand Dictionary of Chinese Literature and the Grand Dictionary of Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy, as well as his contributions to the "Zhonghua Haoshici" poetry anthologies, offers readers a reliable path into the poetic tradition from pre-Qin times to the modern era; Qian Zhonglian on Qing Poetry and the Mengshao Studio Remarks on Poetry reflect his skill in lecturing and in the poetry-talk genre. These achievements bridge popular appreciation and scholarly organization of classical poetry and continue to influence study and research in related fields.
