About the author

Jin Ying is the attributed author of works in the field of traditional Chinese maxims and classical-text compilations. Public information about his life is limited: his nationality, birth and death dates are all unknown. Three related works are currently held in the collection, with Ge Yan Lian Bi (A Collection of Aphorisms) as the representative title, alongside a four-volume edition combining the Tingjing, Bingjian, Caigentan, Shenyin Yu, and Geyan Lianbi, and another edition of Geyan Lianbi. These works fall mainly under prose miscellany, inspirational growth, and Eastern philosophy. They chiefly compile maxims and sayings on conduct from earlier ages, written in concise, neatly structured language that is easy to recite and remember. They circulated widely among ordinary readers and were often used for self-cultivation and elementary education. Because primary sources are scarce, details of Jin Ying's life and scholarly lineage remain to be verified, and readers may focus instead on the content and influence of the maxims he compiled.
