About the author

Guo Shaomin is an author about whom limited public information is available; to date, five works are known to be in circulation. Judging from their subjects, his writing ranges widely. Works such as "Searching for Him Among the Crowd: The Ci Poets and People of the Song Dynasty" offer literary readings of Song-dynasty ci poets and their works, while "The Unified Poet: From Du Fu to Borges" crosses Chinese and Western traditions and takes poets as its thread, showing a sustained interest in classical verse and in Chinese and foreign literary traditions. At the same time, "An Endless Journey of Scenery: Reading Su Li" leans toward reading notes on scholarly works, "The Age of Images: From Kubrick to Jia Zhangke" turns to film directors and visual culture, and "The Ninth Meditation" is closer to the personal essay. Taken together, his writing grows out of reading and film-going experience, combining appreciation with an essayistic quality and moving among literature, film and biographical criticism; it should appeal to readers interested in close reading and in Chinese and foreign cultural topics.
